The performance and safety of transport infrastructure is an essential precondition for the functioning of a modern society and its economy. Bridges are a central element of infrastructure, which is why requirements to be met by these structures are particularly strict. It has to be possible to operate them reliably and with a low risk of failure over long periods. Load bearing deficiencies as well as other traffic restrictions have to be avoided. Although all Member States have committed themselves to this objective, the processes for the safe operation of bridges in Europe are regulated in very different ways. The Bridge Forum is to initiate a Europe-wide exchange of best practice in this field. It is to be explored whether and how digital cutting-edge fields, such as monitoring, big and smart data, virtual and augmented reality with links to BIM data models, can enable a more harmonised approach.
